WENDY C. THOMPSON - Colored Pencil Artist WENDY C. THOMPSON - Colored Pencil Artist

In years past I have worked with watercolor, oil, and graphite, and ultimately found that working with colored pencil allows more precision, control of detail, and depth. A lot of time and patience is required to complete a colored pencil painting, and inexorably it is this same quiet time that fills specific therapeutic and meditative needs in my life. When I am working, my thoughts return to the quiet places of the woods and ponds, and I strive to emulate this in my work. If you feel a sense of quietude and tranquility when viewing my paintings, then I have been successful in conveying my thoughts and feelings to you through my work, and have hopefully given you a quiet place of your own.

My "Loon Lake" painting is now licensed through Barton Cotton for use by the National Wildlife Federation for promotional purposes. Two other paintings, "Wild Lily Fly" and "Blue Damsel" are licensed through Design House Greetings, LLC for the 2008 fall line of cards for Trader Joe's, a unique line of national grocery stores.

2012 There are two (2) 2012 calendars this year – a revision of Ravens & Friends, and Quiet Places. I also have a Coloring Book for All Ages, a collection of line drawings created from my botanical originals. The coloring book is a great companion for the Quiet Places calendar, which has larger prints of the botanicals. I’m currently working on line drawings from my Mandalas, birds and water lilies for more coloring books. If you or a friend are convalescing or need your own quiet places to fill in with color, this would be a wonderful healing gift to help focus and enjoy the day.

Art has always been a part of my life, and the Pacific Northwest offers a continually changing palette from which to draw inspiration. My studio shelves are filled with reference books and collections of bugs, feathers and dragonflies that I refer to for the accuracy and detail recognized in my work. As a child I was a constant visitor to a nearby lake where I learned to catch by hand the small catfish and crawdads living below the dam. Wading in the duckweed, catching frogs and chasing dragonflies, all are relevant memories to my work today. I love nature and I try to spend as much time as possible outdoors, immersed in it, surrounded by it, preferably in the woods near pond and river. I am a self-taught artist, and I believe my work is very unique. I am frequently asked where I studied Oriental design; to me, this just comes naturally. If it looks balanced and feels right, that is the way it goes down on paper.

In 2007, my Mandala series was purchased by Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon and is now included in their permanant art collection. Many beautiful works of art created by artists of Yamhill County, Oregon comprise the complete collection that now graces the 4th Floor, Oncology/Radiology, of the new OHSU Peter O. Kohler Pavillion.

Limited edtion giclée prints of my work are on display in many collections across the country, including the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
